Moong dal Khichdi is a nutrition rich lunch option for a baby. I have introduced rice and moong dal separately as rice and dal water to my baby at her 6 th month. Once she is adjusted with rice and dal individually, I offered this moong dal khichdi. Try to feed small amount when you start and later you can increase the quantity. Let’s check the recipe.

A combination of rice and lentils, khichdi is a one pot Indian dish that is popular in most households across the country. It is interesting to note that khichdi’s popularity goes way back in time.

Healing properties of spices used in khichdi

While the conventional khichdi does not include spices that benefit the cleansing and detox of the body, there are some basic spices used for flavouring, which also enhances the healing properties of this dish. For instance:

  • Turmeric used in khichdi is known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties and this provides relief from respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchial hyperactivity. It also helps treat allergies and liver disorders.
  • Cumin seeds added for flavor helps boost the immune system. It also provides iron, helps improve blood sugar control and reduces food-borne illnesses.

Khichdi for babies :

Khichdi is an ideal food for babies above six months of age. It is one of the most common first foods mothers feed their infants apart from breast milk during the initial formative months. khichdi is easy for babies to eat. The rice and lentils present in khichdi are easy to digest by the infants.

Moong dal Khichdi is a nutrition rich lunch option for a baby.

Prep Time : 5 mins Cooking Time : 10 mins
Serves : 1/2 cup Baby food

Ingredients:
Rice : 2 tsp
Moong dal : 1 tsp
Ghee : ½ tsp
Garlic : 1 clove
Cumin seeds : 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder – a generous pinch
Hing – a pinch
Salt – as needed (salt is not recommended for babies under 1 year of age)
Water – ¾ cup

Method:
1. wash and soak rice and dal for 30 mins together. Then add all ingredients except ghee in pressure cooker.
2, Mix well, close lid. Pressure cook it for 10 mins or 5-6 whistles on medium heat.
3. Open the cooker once the pressure released. Mash the khichadi well with your hands or with a masher and feed your baby warm.

2. Put all together in pressure mix well. Pressure cook it for 10 mins or 5- 6 whistles on medium heat.

3. Open the cooker once the pressure released. Mash the khichadi well with your hands or with a masher and feed your baby warm.

I added little water before serving. Serve warm to your babies
