Coriander Rice/Kothamalli Sadam

we will see how to make coriander rice in today. Coriander Rice / Kothamalli Sadam is a good variety rice recipe perfect for lunch box recipe. It can be served with vadagam and Potato Curry/Potato Fry. The beauty of this recipe is that it can be used to convert plain white rice into this tasty kothamalli sadam in less than 15 minutes. So it a quick fix recipe and is an excellent method of utilizing the left over white rice. I have used basmati rice for this recipe but it can be done with regular rice also.

Prep Time : 10 mins        Cooking Time : 15 mins

Serves : 2-3


Basmati Rice : 1 cup (cooked)

Onion : 1 small sliced

Salt to taste

To Grind: 

Coriander/kothamalli leaves : 1 bunch tightly packed

Green Chilly : 2-3

Ginger : 1 inch

For Seasoning: 

Oil/Ghee : 2 tbsp

Mustard Seeds : 1 tsp

Urad dal : 1 tsp

Channa Dal : 1 tsp

Groundnuts : 1 tbsp


  1. Wash and soak basmati rice for 30 mins. Cook it grainy, set aside to cool down.
  2. Wash coriander leaves under running water 2-3 times. Chop it and grind it along with ginger and green chilly using very less water. Keep the paste aside.
  3. Heat oil/ghee, temper it with seasoning ingredients. Then add in sliced onion, saute it till light brown in color.
  4. Then add the ground paste, needed salt and saute until the raw smell goes and oil separates.
  5. Mix rice and serve it with any fry items. Voila! A tasty, quick and satisfying rice dish is ready.


wash coriander leaves, green chilies and ginger.
Grind it to a smooth paste adding little water. set aside
Heat oil/ghee in a pan. Temper with seasoning ingredients
add onions, saute till light brown in color
Then add in ground coriander leaves paste to it
Cook it medium heat until raw smells goes and oil seperates
Now mix well with cooked rice or left over rice
Tada. Coriander rice/kothamalli rice is ready to serve
