Finger Millet (English) is known as Ragi in Kannada and Kezhvaragu or keppai in Tamil. It is a rich source of calcium, iron, fiber and other minerals. We include ragi in our diet often mainly due to its high nutritional content, especially iron and calcium.
This sweet kozhukattai is very filling and extremely nutritious. It can be had for breakfast or even as an evening snack. It is very healthy and can be given to children after they get back from school.
I like Raagi Pidi kozhukattai than modak, our neighbor used to give us this along with other yummy Ganesh Chaturthi goodies and I always liked raagi kozhukattai. Makes : 13-15
Raagi/Finger millet flour : 1 up
Jaggery (Grated) : 1/2 cup
Water : 1/4 cup +1/4 cup
Grated Coconut : 1tbsp
Cardamon powder : 1/4 tsp
1. Take all ingredients ready. Heat pan, dry roast ragi flour for 3 mins on medium heat or till raw smell leaves. set aside.
2. In same pan, melt 1/2 cup jaggery with 1/4 cup of water. Once its melted fully, filter impurities. Set aside.
3. Then dry roast grated coconut for a while. Now add in filtered jaggery water with 1/4 cup of water. Add in cardamon powder. Allow it to boil nicely for a while.
4. Now add in roasted ragi flour. Keep on low heat. Mix it well immediately without giving leaving. See pic, how it separates from a pan. Transfer it to a plate. Allow it cool down completely.
5. Take small portion, press it with help of our fingers. See picture below. Size its depends how you like. Once all done, boil a steamer. Arrange it. Cover and steam it for 10 mins.
