Dindigul Thalapakatti Chicken Biryani/Thalapakku Chicken Biryani

Biryani takes in our Sunday lunch menu often. And i try so many different variation in biryani. Thalappakatti Chicken Biryani is one of the most delicious biryani and its very very easy to make. The main ingredient for  this biryani is the Biryani spice powder which we ground freshly  that provides the fantastic aroma and flavour to this biryani which adds  extra taste to this biryani.

Serve : 4-5       Soaking Time : 30 mins

Prep Time : 15 mins       Cooking Time : 1hour


Ghee : 3 tbsp

Oil : 2 tbsp

Basmati/Jeera Chamba Rice : 2 cups

Onion : 1 Sliced

Green Chilly : 2

Ginger Garlic Paste : 3 tbsp

Red Chilly powder : 2 tsp

Turmeric Powder : 1 tsp

Coriander Leaves : 1/2 cup

Mint Leaves : 1/2 cup

Thick Coconut Milk : 1 cup

Water : 2 cups

Salt to taste

For Biryani Masala Powder :

Fennel Seeds/Sombu : 2 tbsp

Cinnamon Stick : 2 inch stick

Cardamom : 4-5

Star Anise : 1

Cloves :5

For Marinating Chicken:

Chicken : 1/2 kg

Yogurt/curd : 1 cup

Red chilly powder : 1 tsp

Salt to taste

Method :

  1. Marinate chicken with the given ingredients for 10 mins,You can leave it in the fridge overnight. Grind the ingredients given for the briyani masala to a fine powder. Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 mins.2. Heat oil and ghee in a cooker. Add in onions, green chilli and saute till light golden. Now add in ginger garlic paste and saute for a min. Add in turmeric, chilli powder, the ground masala, coriander and mint leaves. Saute it for a min.

    3. Now add in the marinated chicken along with the marination. Saute it for 5 mins so the chicken gets coated with the masala. Now cover the pan and cook on a low heat for 15 mins. Pour water and coconut milk with salt. Allow it to boil, then add soaked basmati rice.

    4. Now bring everything to a boil. Cover the pressure cooker and let everything cook for 1 whistle on medium high heat. Simmer the flame and let it sit for 15 mins. turn off the heat. Once the pressure is released. Open and fluff the rice with a fork. Serve with raita.20170507_132303
