Uppu Urundai is an easy and healthy South Indian breakfast/snacks recipe. It is steamed rice ball flavored with Indian seasonings. Whether you make it for breakfast or whether you make it as a evening snack, one thing is for sure. It is a healthy dish which your whole family will enjoy. While we call it as Uppu Urandai in our household, it is also frequently called as Pidi Kozhukattai or Uppu Kozhukattai. For authentic uppu kozhukattai, i used fresh rice flour and freshly grated coconut. It enhances the flavour of this dish.

Makes : 25 – 30 

Prep Time : 5 mins       Cooking Time : 25 – 30  mins

Ingredients:

Rice Flour : 1 cup

Water : 2 cups

Grated Coconut : 1/4 cup

Salt to taste

For Seasoning:

Oil : 2 tsp

Mustard Seeds : 1 tsp

Split Urad dal : 1 tsp

Dry Red Chilly : 2 cut into small pieces

Channa dal : 2 tbsp

Hing : 1/4 tsp

Method:

  1. Heat oil in a pan, add in all the seasoning ingredients and saute for a min. Add in water, salt and coconut. Bring it to a boil.

    2. Once it boils, simmer and add in rice flour slowly and mix well so no lumps are formed.  Now keep this cooking till it leaves the sides and comes together.

3. Remove this mix from heat and let it cool so you can handle. Once it is cool knead once so it is smooth.  Grease your hands slightly with some oil and take small portion from it and make a balls or press is slightly.  Now repeat the same with the remaining dough. Place it in a steamer and steam it for 8 to 10 mins.

Remove it and allow it to cool slightly before serving. I served it as a snacks with tea. 20170430_180956
