Mutton Gravy with Potato/Aatu Kari Urulai Kuzhumbu/South Indian Style Mutton Kuzhumbu


Here iam going to share a basic and common mutton kuzhumbu with urulai kizhangu, which made in all most home in Tamil nadu. This is very simple mutton kuzhumbu, that anybody can make without going wrong with basic spices available in kitchen.

Serves : 3-4

Prep Time : 15 mins     Cooking Time : 35 mins


Mutton : 350 gms

Onion : 1 small size chopped

Tomato : 1 large chopped

Ginger Garlic Paste : 2 tsp

Potato : 2 medium sized cubed

Red chilly Powder : 1 tsp

Coriander powder : 2 tsp

Cumin Powder : 1 tsp

Garam masala : 2 tsp

Turmeric powder : 1 tsp

Coconut milk : 1/2 cup (Thick)

Salt to taste

To Temper:

Oil : 3 tbsp

Fennel Seed : 1/2 tsp

Bay leaf : 1

Cloves : 3

Cardamon : 2

Star Anise : 1

Method :

  1. Clean and wash mutton pieces in water, set aside. Chop potato, onion and tomato, set all ingredients ready.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai, add tempering ingredients. Once splutter, add in onion. Saute it to transparent. Then add ginger garlic paste. Cook it for 2 mins.

3. Then add all spice powders with required salt, cook it again for 2 mins. Now add mutton pieces, mix well with spice. Add in chopped tomato, transfer it to pressure cooker. Add 2 cups of water.  Pressure cook it for 20 mins.

4. Once air released, again transfer cooked mutton to kadai or cook in pressure cooker itself. Add Cubed potatoes, allow to cook till soft. Once potato done, add thick coconut milk, boil it for 5 mins.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with white rice or idly, dosa etc.,



  1. If you want, you can add smooth coconut paste also.
