Yellow Pumpkin Kootu/Parangikai Kootu/Manjal Poosanikai Kootu


Kootu is a South Indian style sidedish prepared with dal, vegetable and ground coconut masala. I have prepared kootu with yellow pumpkin / parangikai and served along with Vatha kuzhambu with appalam/papad. I love this kootu very much.

Serves : 2-3

Prep Time : 10 mins      Cooking Time : 20 mins


Yellow Pumpkin : 2 cups chopped

Channa dal : 1/4 cup

Moong Dal : 2 tbsp

Turmeric powder : 1 tsp

Salt to taste

To Grind:

Shallots : 2

Grated Coconut : 2 tbsp

Green Chilly : 1

Cumin Seeds : 1 tsp

Rice Flour : 1 tsp (optional)

To Temper:

Oil : 2 tsp

Mustard Seed : 1 tsp

Urad Dal : 1/2 tsp

Curry leaf : few

Dry Red chilly : 1


  1. Take channa and moong dal in a pressure cooker. Wash it and pressure cook it for 1 whistle. Set a side.
  2. Chop pumpkin and wash in clean water. In kadai, add little water, cover and cook till soft.

3. Then add cooked dal, add in turmeric powder and salt. Mix it well and cook it for 5 mins. In mean time, grind ingredients under “To grind”. Mix it with kootu, cook for 2 mins.

Done. Temper it and serve with any tangy kuzumbhu along with white rice.20170405_203940
