Tomato Rice/Thakkali Sadam

Tomato rice/Thakkali sadam is very easy and tasty rice recipe. It can be made with leftover rice also. Quick to put together, easy ingredients and very easy to customize. This dish is my hubby’s favorite for lunch box. It would be good for kids lunch box too. In this dish i didnt add any spice powder. Its real taste in tomato and green chilies. My aunty used to tell this as “Varutha Sadam”.

Serves : 2

Prep Time : 5 mins        Cooking Time : 15 mins


Cooked Rice : 2 cups

Onion : 1/4 cup chopped

Green chilly : 2-3

Tomato : 3 medium chopped

Turmeric Powder : 1 tsp

Oil : 2 tbsp

Mustard Seeds : 1 tsp

Curry leaves : few

Salt to taste


  1. Prep chopping your veggies, set aside. Heat a pan with oil, crack mustard seeds.2. Add chopped onion, green chilies and curry leaves with turmeric powder. Cook till onions get light brown in color. Add in tomatoes and salt. Cook till mushy.

    3. Cook tomato till all moisture from tomato evaporate and oil starts to leaves from sides. Turn off heat. Add cooked rice and mix well gently.

    Done. Serve with any poriyal, varuval or with yogurt too.


    1. Adjust salt accordingly if you cook rice with salt.
