Urad dal chutney is a simple accompaniment for idli and dosa. The distinct aroma of roasted Urad dal makes me eat it with rice when nothing else gets down my throat. In my family mostly we prefer this chutney for travel, because it will stay for long time. You can make this chutney without coconut also. It will accompany with variety rice also. I bet, it’s distinct aroma and flavor will make you gulp down more idly/ dosa than you normally eat. This chutney is a simple one and can be made in a jiffy.

Prep Time : 5 mins     Cooking Time : 10 mins

Ingredients:

Urad Dal/Ulutham Paruppu : 1/2 cup

Shredded coconut : 1/4 cup

Dry red chilly : 2

Tamarind :  small lemon size

Salt to taste

Oil : 2 tsp

For Tempering:

Oil : 2 tsp

Mustard seeds : 1 tsp

urad dal : 1 tsp

Curry Leaves : a spring

Method:

  1. Heat oil in pan, roast urad dal and dry red chilly to golden brown in color. img-20170206-wa0023

2. Then add rest ingredients, saute it for 2 mins. Allow it to cool down and take it to a mixer, grind it to smooth.

Temper and serve it with idly or dosa.
