Spinach Pulao, spinach Rice, Palak Rice, is an easy and healthy one pot meal and quite perfect for kids lunch box too. For making kids to eat spinach, it is easy way. If you want to add veggies, you can.  Here im using coconut milk. If you dont want means, you can add water also.

Prep Time : 10 mins      Cooking Time 30 mins


Basmati Rice : 1 cup

Spinach : 1 cup

Onion : 1 Sliced

Tomato : 2

Green chilly : 2

Ginger Garlic paste : 2 tbsp

Coconut Milk : 1/2 Cup (Optional)

Water : 1 cup

Salt to taste

For Tempering:

Ghee : 1 tbsp

Oil : 2 tsp

Star Anise : 1

Bay Leaf : 1

Fennel seed : 1 tsp

Cardamom : 2

Cinnamon Stick : 1 inch

cloves : 2


  1. First in a sauce pan, boil water, add spinach. Cook for 3 mins. Allow it to cool. Take it to a blender, make a smooth puree, set aside. Soak basmati rice for 20mins.

2. Chop onion, tomato and green chilies.  Heat cooker, add oil and ghee. Then add tempering ingredients, sizzled, add onion and green chilies saute to golden brown in color. Add ginger garlic paste, saute for a while.

3. Now add tomatoes, saute till mushy. Then add spinach puree, saute it for 2 mins, then add coconut milk and water with salt.

4. Add rice once it started boiling, keep on medium heat. Cover and cook for 50 %. Then keep heat very low at the max. Cover lid and put weight to cooker, cook it for 5 mins. Then turn off heat, allow to rest on stove for 20 mins and then fluff it of. Spinach rice is ready.
