Kuthiraivali Pongal/Barnyard Millet Pongal

In Tiffin items, i Love pongal a lot. This is my favorite recipe.  I make it quite often too. Using rice to making pongal, me and my hubby are love to have kuthiraivali pongal. I served this with my all time favourite coconut chutney, it was so delicious. You can serve with sambar too. Serves : 3

Prep Time : 5 mins     Cooking Time : 30 mins


Kuthiraivali / Barnyard Millet – 1 cup

Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu – 1/2 cup

Salt to taste

Water – 4 cup

For Tempering:

Ghee : 2tbsp

Oil : 1 tbsp

Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 2 tsp

Whole Pepper – 2 tsp

Green Chillies – 2 chopped finely

Ginger – 1 tbsp finely chopped

Curry leaves – a spring


  1. Wash and soak millet and moong dal for 10 mins. In mean time, start chopping ginger and green chillies set aside.
  2. Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker. Add tempering ingredients, allow it to sizzle. Then add water and salt, give a nice boil to water.

    3. Once water boiled, add soaked millet and dal in to it, mix well. Cover cooker with lid, keep on medium high heat. Wait for a whistle, then turn heat for medium, cook for 5 mins. Done.  Serve with chutney or sambar.
