Vengayam thakkali thokku or Simple Onion-Tomato Chutney (No Grinding Chutney) is an easy & simple side dish for Idli, dosa & chapathi prepared by cooking onions & tomatoes well with simple, easily available masala items at kitchen until they reach a thokku-like consistency. Onion Tomato Thokku and chapati is a nostalgic dish for a lot of us, Tamilians. Whenever we used to travel, Chapati and Thokku would be packed and kept. Lets go for the recipe.

Serves : 3

Prep Time : 5 mins     Cooking Time : 15 mins

Ingredients:

Onion : 2 finely chopped

Tomato : 4 finely chopped

Oil : 3 tbsp

Mustard seeds : 1 tsp

Kuzhumbu milagai podi : 2 tsp

Salt to taste

Turmeric powder : 1 tsp

Rice flour : 2 tsp

Water as required

Method:

  1. Chop onions and tomatoes, set a side. Heat kadai with oil, add mustard seeds. Once sizzled add chopped onions, saute it till golden in color. Then add, tomatoes, spice powder and salt.

2. Cover and cook till tomatoes get mushy. Add required water, allow it to cook for 5 mins. Then add rice flour mix with some water, to get a thick consistency.

Serve with idly, dosa or chapatti as your wish and enjoy.

Notes:

  1. You can add red chilly powder and coriander powder, replacement of kuzhumbu milagai podi.
