Sago/Javvarisi kozhukattai/Sago dumplings recipe

This is my grandma’s recipe. But i did some modulations in this. Actually my grandma used to soak sago for 8 hours and she will tell there should not excess water while cooking. For long time, in my family if we want this kolukattai, my grandma used to cook. I love this kolukattai very much. But after came to US, i try to do this kolukattai with some modulations, and yes, it was success. Now im going to share this recipe.

Serves : 3     Soaking Time : 30 mins

Prep Time : 15 mins     Cooking 15 mins


Sago/Javvarisi : 1 cup

Shredded coconut : 1/2 cup

Cardamom powder : 2 pinch

Sugar : 1/2 cup

Water : 1 cup


  1. First soak sago with a cup of water for 30 mins. After 30 mins drain water completely. Transfer it to mixer and give just one speed. It will be coarse form as in pic.

2. For filling, mix shredded coconut, sugar and cardamom powder. Then take a hand full of coarse sago make in ball form, press in the middle. Make like a small bowl and fill with coconut mix and try to close it tightly without any crack in it.


3. Then in steamer, place a wet cloth and arrange this kolukattai on it and cover it with lid. Cook on medium high for 15 mins. Then serve hot.


  1. While serving just coat with sugar and shredded coconut it wil taste gud.
